Surrounded by a massive 20 to 30-foot high wall, old Sana'a is one of the world's oldest inhabited cities. The suq or central market is located in a labyrinth of streets and alleyways in the centre of the old city. A large variety of merchandise is offered for sale yet sectors specialising in specific commodities make shopping comparatively easy. Every male Yemeni wears a jambiya (a curved dagger) on a finely decorated belt. It is always worn in front of the body with the tip of the sheath pointing to the right. In this picture, a fine selection of jambiyas is offered for sale. The handles of the finest and most valued daggers are made from rhino horn, which resulted in serious poaching of the African rhino. Thankfully, these handles are rarely seen today.
