Prince Albert (1819-1861), British Prince Consort. Prince Albert, the German husband of Queen Victoria of Britain, was a patron of science and a sponsor of the Great Exhibition of 1851. Born Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, he and Victoria fell in love at their first meeting. Marrying her in 1840 he became Prince Consort and her main adviser. The Great Exhibition of 1851 featured thousands of technological items from around the world. It was hugely successful and Albert used the profits to open museums. Suffering from overwork, Albert died of typhoid aged 42.
