Large Hadron Collider (LHC) detector. This is the CMS (compact muon solenoid). The LHC is a 27-kilometre-long high-energy particle accelerator located at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) in Switzerland. It uses rings of superconducting magnets to accelerate beams of protons to collide at high energies. Large detectors record the sub-atomic particles created in the collisions. The results are used to study the inner structure of matter and the origins of the universe.
