Bust in bronze of John Marshall (1765-1845), British industrialist. Marshall was born in Leeds, son of a linen draper whose company he joined at the age of 18. Five years later Marshall took over the business when his father died. He purchased the rights to a flax spinning machine made by Kendrew and Porthouse and in 1792 built his first mill. He built a second mill in 1796 that was the first iron-framed building in the world. His most ambitious project was the Temple Mill, the design based on the Temple of Edfu at Horus in Egypt, completed by an obelisk-shaped chimney. Marshall was considered one of the most liberal of the mill owners. Overseers were not allowed to strike the workers and younger children were encouraged to attend day schools. He was a leading proponent of the founding of Leeds University and served as a Member of Parliament for three years.
