George Bellas Greenough (1778-1855), English geologist. Born in London, Greenough attended Eton school and Pembroke College Oxford. Although intending to study Law, he instead turned to natural history and studied mineralogy at Freiburg. He was one of the founders of the Geological Society of London. In 1812 he presented the first draft of a geological map of Britain, made by collating observations by workers across the country. The final map was published in 1820, five years after Smith?s famous map but was far superior. In 1843 he started to collate a geological map of India, despite never visiting the country, and published the result in 1854.
