Lewis Weston Dillwyn (1778-1855), English botanist. Born in London, Dillwyn was sent to South Wales to manage a pottery leased by his father. Dillwyn was an effective manager despite having no experience of ceramics, and over a decade expanded the works and started to make porcelain. All this industry allowed Dillwyn to indulge his love of botany in his leisure time. He is especially known for his work on algae, describing several new species of the genus Conferva. He retired from industry in 1817 to pursue a career in politics, being elected a Member of Parliament in 1834 and Mayor of Swansea in 1839.
