Charles Green (1785-1870), British balloonist. Green first ascended in a balloon on 19 July 1821. Between 1821 and 1852, he made 526 ascents. His most famous exploit was his overnight flight on 7-8 November 1836. Piloting the balloon Royal Vauxhall, Green and two passengers covered a distance of 722 kilometres in 18 hours, traveling from Vauxhall Gardens, in London, England, to Weilburg, in the Duchy of Nassau (now Germany). This set a record which stood until 1907. In 1838 he took the balloon Great Nassau to an altitude of 8, 274 metres. Green retired from flying in 1852.
