Charles Hullmandel (1789-1850), British lithographer. Hullmandel was born in London to German parents. In his early life he worked as a painter, having trained in London and Paris. During a trip to Germany in 1817 he met Senefelder who introduced him to lithography. He printed his own lithographs of sketches in 1818, but was dissatisfied with the results. He set about improving the lithographic process and devised a way of reproducing the subtle tonal variations and colour washes favoured by the Romantic artists of the day. In 1824 he wrote a handbook, 'The Art of Drawing on Stone', and in 1843 established a printing firm with partner W. Walton.
