James Ferguson (1710-1776), Scottish astronomer. A self-educated man, Ferguson invented and improved upon a number of astronomical and scientific instruments. His astronomical observations lead him to predict solar and lunar eclipses, and transits of the planets with precision. He became well-known for his popularisation of science giving many public lectures, and writing several books.
