Velvet worm (Phylum Onychophora) on a leaf. This segmented worm-like animal is related to the arthropods and tardigrades. The head is at left, and each body segment has stub-like feet called lobopods. Velvet worms are predators, using a slime-like secretion to subdue their prey of small invertebrates. They average 5 centimetres in length, though the largest can be 20 centimetres long. Photographed in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
