Spiral galaxy NGC 2397, Hubble Space Telescope image. This image shows details in the galaxy's star-forming clouds, including dark bands of interstellar dust. NGC 2397 is some 60 million light years distant from Earth, in the constellation of Volans. Image data obtained in October 2006 with Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys instrument. This image includes the last stages of supernova SN 2006bc, one of the brighter spots towards lower left within the galaxy.
