Plant infected with rust fungus. Small, rust-colored spots on a leaf of the yellow starthistle (Centaurea solstitialis). Spores of this rust fungus were deliberately released to control the presence of this weed. Yellow starthistle is a potent weed in the USA. It is difficult to destroy, but can be attacked using parasites specific to the species. This method of biological control has the benefit of not harming other plant or animal species.
