Lime nail galls. Galls (red) of the lime nail gall mite (Eriophytes tiliae) on a leaf of a small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata) tree. The galls are outgrowths of the leaf's epidermis caused by chemicals released by the mites. The mites live and develop inside the galls whilst feeding on the sap of the tree.
