Martian impact crater. Coloured satellite image of an impact crater (centre, middle) on the northern plains of Mars. The terrain surface (red) is pitted with pockets of carbon dioxide frost (white). The impact crater lies over a prominent ridge (top left to bottom right) which is thought to have been formed by a process similar to glacial action on Earth. Image obtained by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) on 22nd August 2008. The width of this image is roughly one kilometre across.
