The stigma is part of the female reproductive system (gynoecium) of the flower. It's surface is covered in sticky glands that catch pollen grains carried into the flower by insects or wind. Some pollen tubes (olive green) can be seen sprouting from the pollen and growing into the surface of the stigma. The male genetic material travels from the pollen grains, through the tubes and down the style to reach the ovum (egg) at its base. Magnification x21 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
