Peaches (Prunus persica), historical artwork. These are 'Teton de Venus' peaches, a cultivar of the peach. The peach originated in China, and spread to Europe through the Middle East, Persia and the Roman Empire. This cultivar was developed in France, under the patronage of Louis XIV, the Sun King. Two flowers are at lower right, and a halved peach at lower left shows the stone (drupe) that contains the plant's seed. Artwork from a book published in 1768.
