Early Purple Orchid (Orchis mascula) flowering in chestnut woods. Referred to by Shakespeare as 'Dead Men's Purples' a reference to the fanciful resemblance of the twin tubers to human testicles and the name Orchis is derived from ancient Greek for testicle.
