Human embryonic kidney cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of human embryonic kidney (HEK) cells in culture. The HEK cell line has been transformed by the insertion of adenovirus DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) to continuously grow in culture. The cells are easy to work with and so widely used in biological research. HEK cells were transformed by Frank Graham in 1970.
