Mertz Glacier Tongue calving. Sequence of satellite images showing part of the Mertz Glacier Tongue breaking away from Antarctica following the impact of Iceberg B-09B around 12-13 February. The images, from the MODIS sensor on NASA's Aqua satellite were taken on 7th (top), 20th (middle) and 26th (bottom) February. In all the images, the Mertz Glacier Tongue is at left, with Iceberg B-09B at right. Iceberg B-09B is 94 by 39 kilometres, while the new Iceberg C-28 formed by this rare event is 78 by 39 kilometres. This event will disrupt the marine ecosystems in the area, threatening the wildlife that feeds there.
