Early 20th century ophthalmoscopy tool. Ophthalmoscopic tools are used to examine the interior of the eye and measure its optical properties. This is a Busch refractometer dating from 1920. Designed by Walter Thorner and the Emil Busch company, this instrument measures refraction within the eye. It was produced in Jena, Germany, by the Carl Zeiss company, still in existence today and one of the world's leading optical equipment manufacturers.
