Boiling in Hell. Belief in God, Heaven and Hell was almost universal in the Christian world during medieval times. The New Testament describes Hell as a place of eternal damnation and punishment. This could be avoided with the appropriate penance. Images of devils and the torture of condemned souls were used to reinforce this message at a time when most of the population were illiterate. This artwork is from a 14th century fresco in the Campo Santo, Piazza dei Miracoli, Pisa, Italy.
