AEA Silver Dart aeroplane, during test flights at Hammondsport, New York State, USA, in October 1908. This aircraft would later be dismantled and taken to Baddeck, Nova Scotia, to be flown from the ice on 23 February 1909 in what would be the first controlled powered flight in Canada. One of the designers and pilots of this aircraft was the Canadian aviation pioneer John Alexander Douglas McCurdy (1886-1961). Others involved with the Aerial Experiment Association (AEA) that designed this single-engine biplane were Frederick Walker Baldwin (1882-1948) and Glenn Curtiss (1878-1930).
