Like other neighbouring states, Alabama at the time had a large African-American population descended from slaves freed in the 1860s. The African-American population did not achieve full emancipation until the civil rights movements of the 1960s. As of 2010, the verified world record for a multi-generation family is seven generations living at the same time.
