Joshua Brookes (1761-1833), English anatomist. Brookes was born in London and studied anatomy and surgery in London and Paris. On returning to London he became an anatomy teacher. He founded the Brookesian Museum to house his ever-growing collection of specimens in comparative anatomy. He developed a preserving technique that retained the original colours in most tissues, work for which he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1819. He wrote extensively on comparative anatomy, including placing the cheetah in its own genus (Acinonyx).
