Schiaparelli Crater. Artwork of a view from space of a large impact crater (centre left) on Mars, named after the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli (1835-1910). The crater was named by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in honour of Schiaparelli's work in observing Mars by telescope. The crater is 461 kilometres across and is located in the Sinus Sabaeus area of the Martian equator. The surface of Mars has been extensively mapped by unmanned spacecraft placed in orbit around Mars. Erosion features suggest that water once flowed on Mars.
