Smooth newt (Lissotriton vulgaris, formerly Triturus vulgaris) tadpole. The large feathery structures behind the tadpoles head are gills. These are gradually lost as the newt's lungs mature. Newt tadpoles feed on plankton, insect larvae and molluscs. The smmoth newt is found throughout Europe.
