Hadley's octant. This artwork is from a 1738 edition of the work 'A description of a new instrument for taking the latitude or other altitude at sea' (1734) by the English mathematician and inventor John Hadley (1682-1744). Hadley invented the octant in the 1730s, an instrument used in navigation that was a precursor to the sextant.
