Javan rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus). This species of rhinoceros has a single, small horn, and long, pointed upper lips. It was once widespread through Indonesia, South-East Asia and parts of India and China. It was hunted to extinction in much of its range in the early 20th century, and is now critically endangered with less than 100 individuals found in two small areas in Java and Vietnam. This 1874 artwork was by the British animal painter George Bouverie Goddard (1832-1886).
