Tropical crops, 17th century artwork. These crops are from the Malabar Coast of south-western India. The crops are shown in the foreground, with the trees in the background. The labels identify the crops as 'cocoa nuts' (an archiac name for coconuts), a Pynang palm, and a wild cinnamon tree. Artwork from a 1665 account by the Dutch traveller Johan Nieuhof (1618-1672) of his travels in Brazil, India and China. Nieuhof travelled in Brazil in the 1640s and China in the 1650s, and then worked for the Dutch East India Company in the 1660s. Many translations were published of his accounts of his travels.
