Sugar cane harvest. Man cutting down charred sugar cane (Saccharum sp.) plants in a field. Burning the plants is the first step in the harvesting of the sugar cane, and is done to remove the leaves that would hinder the sugar cane cutters in their work. The process is controversial as is produces enormous toxic clouds of smoke, and kills hundreds of wild animals trapped in the fire. Photographed in Brazil, in August.
