Mitosis. Light micrograph of hyacinth root cells undergoing mitosis (nuclear division). Mitosis is the formation of two daughter nuclei from one parent nucleus. One cell at lower centre left is in early telophase, the last stage of mitosis before cytokinesis (cellular division). The chromosomes, which contain two identical chromatids and are made of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA, red), have been separated and moved to opposite poles of the cell. The chromatids are divided equally between the cells. The nuclear envelope will reform around the chromosomes and a new cell wall will form between the two daughter cells (cytokinesis). Magnification: x570 printed 10 centimetres wide.
