Brewery, 19th century artwork. This is the barley storage room at the brewery of Sevres, France. Workers are filling wheeled containers with barley grains (right) and then spreading them out on the floor with rakes. This stage allows the barley grains to begin to germinate. They will then be dried and milled before being used to produce beer. The first industrial brewery in Sevres was opened in 1852. Engraving from 'Grands Hommes et Grands Faits de l'Industrie' (Great Men and Great Facts of Industry), published in France circa 1880.
