Francoise Barre-Sinoussi (born 1947), French AIDS researcher and virologist. In the 1980s, Barre-Sinoussi contributed to the discovery of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). In 2008, she was jointly awarded a share of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for this work. She is a member of the French Academy of Sciences, Director of Research at the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM), and a Professor at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, France.
