The original was launched by the Soviet Union on 12 April 1961 and carried Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin into orbit around the Earth, making him the first human being in space. Note the circle on the spherical re-entry module that marks the ejection hatch, the communications antennas on top, and the oxygen and nitrogen tanks for life support mounted on the equipment module to the rear.
