Element 117. Artwork of the nucleus of the heavy element 117, the production of which was confirmed in 2010 after a two-year joint US-Russian study. The project to produce this new element involved bombarding a target of an isotope of berkelium (249-Bk, not shown) with ions of an isotope of calcium (48-Ca, seen in background). This produced 6 atoms of element 117. The smaller spheres making up the nuclei are protons and neutrons. Element 117 has the placeholder name of ununseptium, but as part of the group of halogens is also named eka-astatine (one below the halogen astatine).
