Solar atmospheric phenomena, artwork published in Specula Physico-Mathematico-Historica (1696), an encyclopedia of science by the German monk and author Johann Zahn (1641-1707). The text is in Latin, with the labels indication the compass directions and the location of the zenith. Phenomena shown here include halos and sun dogs, both caused by the optical effects of ice crystals in the sky. Depending on the conditions, partial or complete rings of light appear around or near the Sun.
