Fulgurite. A sample of fulgurite, a rock formed from sand fused by lightning. When lightning strikes a sand bed, the electric charge may follow a particular course through the sand rather than being dispersed. The region around the discharge is intensely heated, fusing the sand to form tube-like fulgurite formations underground, which can measure many metres in length. This sample was found on Mount Ararat in eastern Turkey.
