Portrait of geneticist Dr. Oliver A. Ryder holding a DNA map showing kinship between birds of the California condor, Gymnogyps californianus. Dr. Ryder is involved in research to save the rare and endangered California condor from extinction. Less than 100 condors survive in 1993. The autoradio- graph (X-ray) sheet being held contains vertical banded lines of DNA, each line belonging to a different condor. Each bird has a unique DNA fingerprint, but some DNA bands are shared by related birds. By this technique, family relation- ships among surviving condors can be established for breeding and management of the species. Photographed at San Diego Zoo in California, USA.
