Rocket being fired at Copenhagen, 1807. A 'service rocket', designed by Sir William Congreve, being launched from a ship during the British bombardment of Copenhagen in 1807. The rocket consisted of a warhead (solid shot or explosive shell), fixed to a brass cylinder filled with gunpowder. This missile was stabilised by a long pole, similar to a firework. The rockets were notoriously inaccurate, being suitable for attacking large targets such as cities but almost useless on the battlefield. The use of rockets in the British bombardment of Fort Henry is remembered in the US National Anthem.
