Rock patterns on Mars. Coloured satellite image of branching rock patterns on the floor of Antoniadi Crater on Mars. It is thought they were formed when water-carved channels filled with sediment that was resistant to erosion. Over an estimated billion years, the land surrounding the channels were eroded by the wind, leaving the sediment-filled channels relatively high standing. Image obtained by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) on 22nd March 2009. The width of this image is roughly 1.9 kilometres across.
