At right is the biopsied area of the cervix. Cervical conization involves the removal of a cone-shaped area of tissue from the mucous membrane of the cervix. This can be done either for diagnostic purposes of to remove pre-cancerous cells (whitish area, lower right) to prevent development and spread of cancer. It is a common treatment following abnormal results from a smear test.
