Almandine mineral sample. This mineral (red-brown crystals) is a type of garnet, and consists of silicate combined with the metals iron and aluminium. Here, this has produced a characteristic brownish-red colour. The well-developed crystals are embedded in a schist or other metamorphic rock. This sample, from near Lake Martin in Alabama, USA, is 3.5 centimetres across.
