The Eaters of the Dead. Satirical medieval artwork from a play titled 'Die Totenfresser' (The Eaters of the Dead). This scene from the play depicts a bishop, monk, nuns, and others, sitting around a table, carving up and eating a corpse, with a devil figure at lower left. Two anti-Catholic Reformation plays of this name were staged in the 1520s by the Swiss dramatists Pamphilus Gengenbach (1521) and Nicolas Manuel (1523). This woodcut illustration dates from circa 1530, and was reproduced in 'Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin' (Caricature and Satire in Medicine, 1921) by the German art historian and physician Eugen Hollander (1867-1932).
