Genetic plant pesticide research. Dead lesser cornstalk borer (Elasmopalpus lignosellus) larva (upper centre) in a petri dish with leaves from a genetically modified peanut (Arachis hypogaea) plant. The larva of the cornstalk borer are a serious agricultural pest. This plant has been developed to contain a protein from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) bacteria that acts as an insecticide. After only a few bites of the leaves the larva crawled off the leaf and died.
