Beetle exoskeleton. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of scales on the external surface of the exoskeleton of a carpet beetle (family Dermestidae). The scales are flattened versions of modified hairs, or setae. Insect exoskeletons are mostly made of the polysaccharide chitin.
