Buffon notes this sufferer of cyclopia (also known as cyclocephaly or synophthalmia) was born October 1766, but lived only a few hours. Buffon gives few details, the plate is after Biheron and not original observation. He notes more details can be found in the gazette \"Mercure de France\". Cyclopia is a congenital abnormality in which the orbits of the eye fail to divide in two cavities. It causes the forebrain to stay whole instead of having two distinct hemispheres, resulting in a single optic and olefactory lobe. Facial malformation or absence of nose/mouth is associated with this disorder. Gene mutation and environmental toxins can cause this condition."
