Plate VI, page 582, De Seve drawn & Chevillet engraver. Supplement of Volume IV of \ L'Histoire Naturelle\" (servant de suite a l'histoire naturelle de l'homme). Published by M. le Comte de Buffon 1777 at 'L'imprimerie Royale, Paris. Buffon notes this sufferer of cyclopia (also known as cyclocephaly or synophthalmia) was born October 1766, but lived only a few hours. Buffon gives few details, the plate is after Biheron and not original observation. He notes more details can be found in the gazette \"Mercure de France\". Cyclopia is a congenital abnormality in which the orbits of the eye fail to divide in two cavities. It causes the forebrain to stay whole instead of having two distinct hemispheres, resulting in a single optic and olefactory lobe. Facial malformation or absence of nose/mouth is associated with this disorder. Gene mutation and environmental toxins can cause this condition."
