Waterton was the famously eccentric squire and pioneering conservationist of Waterton Hall. This incident occurred during his 1820 Demerara (Guyana) trip. He was accompanied by native Indians and black slaves of his host Charles, and later Robert, Edmonstone. One of these slaves, John Edmonstone, learnt taxidermy from Waterton in Guyana and later travelled with his master to Britain where he was freed. John was later employed by the Edinburgh Museum, where he taught Charles Darwin taxidermy, and inspired him with his accounts of the rainforest."
