DNA damage, conceptual artwork. The fragmentation (centre) of this model of a strand of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), represents genetic damage or mutations. DNA is the genetic material that controls the growth and development of all living organisms. It has a double helix form, with two spiralling sugar phosphate strands joined by pairs of nucleotide bases (coloured bars). It is the order along the strands of these nucleotides bases, of which there are four types, that forms the genetic code.
