Thomas Hearne (1678-1735), English antiquary. Hearne was educated at home and at school in Bray and matriculated at St.Edmund's Hall, Oxford. He took his degree in 1699 and was appointed assistant keeper of the Bodleian Library. He proved to be a gifted editor of the chroniclers of England, perhaps the most important primary historical source. However, he refused to swear an oath of allegiance to King George I and was thus denied higher office. This portrait was first published in Ectypa varia by Hearne printed at London in 1737.
