Declinometer. 17th century illustration showing a declinometer, a device for measuring the magnetic dip angle. This is the angle between the Earth's magnetic field and the horizon. The instrument is placed upright on the ground, and the needle aligns itself with the local magnetic field. This illustration was first published in De magnete by William Gilbert, printed in London in 1600.
